Midwest Adult Congenital Cardiac Center (MACC)
Thanks to advances in surgical and medical care, most people born with serious congenital heart defects are now surviving into adulthood. The number of adults with congenital heart disease is increasing at a rate of 5% per year, and it is estimated that adults with congenital heart disease now outnumber children. Unfortunately, many adults with congenital heart disease perceive their condition as “fixed” after surgical repair, believing they require no further follow-up care. This perception can potentially result in long-term health consequences.
To address the needs of adult congenital heart disease patients, Children’s Heart Clinic has teamed up with Minneapolis Heart Institute and Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota to form the Midwest Adult Congenital Cardiac (MACC) Center. At the MACC Center, patients will experience a smooth, uninterrupted transition of healthcare from pediatric specialists to a medical team capable of providing comprehensive cardiac care, helping these individuals to live longer, healthier lives. Our medical professionals address important issues including:
•Personalized education related to the individual’s specific condition •Potential interventions/surgeries needed in the future •Endocarditis prophylaxis •Heart-healthy diets •Exercise options •Emotional support •Appropriate family planning based on the individual’s unique physiology •Genetic counseling and high risk pregnancy care
With the MACC Center’s combination of specialized care providers, associated hospitals, and the ability to share advanced technologies, we are able offer a full range of outpatient and inpatient care including clinic appointments, advanced cardiac imaging, cardiac catheterizations, EP studies, surgical repair and more.
